
Cellist Phoebe Chu has been a student at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts since 2005. She is a grateful recipient of the Herbert Zipper Scholarship and was also awarded the Wesley Bing Leung Memorial Scholarship in 2013. Phoebe has performed under the batons of Alexander Treger, James Conlon, Maxim Eshkenazy, and Daniel Suk, and currently serves as co-principal in the Colburn Chamber Orchestra. In June of 2017, she had the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Los Angeles Dream Orchestra in Zipper Hall at the Colburn School. She has also performed in master classes with cellists such as John Walz and Thomas Lowenheim, and appears frequently on Colburn School’s Friday Night and School Recital series. In addition, she has performed on LACMA’s live broadcast series, Sundays Live.
In past summers, Phoebe has attended the Sierra Academy of Music and Montecito International Music Festival. As a member of the Crossroads School’s Elizabeth Mandell Music Institute, Phoebe engaged in a community program in which she mentored students between the ages of six and 10. She continues to participate in community engagement concerts, visiting local elementary schools through the Colburn School’s Musical Encounter program. She studies cello with Dr. Richard Naill and participates in the Community School’s Ed and Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute.
Phoebe is also passionate about literature and languages, studying French, Chinese, German, and Irish Gaelic.
